Dutch Oven Desserts @ Cabela’s

Last weekend was my first seminar at the newly opened Cabela’s in Springfield, Oregon.  My topic, Dutch Oven Desserts… can’t go wrong there!

3-Ingredient Apple Spice Cake, Cabela’s Berry Cobbler and Semi-Homemade Sticky Brown Sugar Cinnamon Rolls were prepared in minutes and while everything baked away we talked Dutch oven cooking.  Dutch oven cooking is convenient, easy and can be used almost anywhere.  Try out these quick recipes below.

3 Ingredient Apple Spice Cake

  • 2 cans apple pie filling
  • 1 box spice cake mix
  • 1 can 7-up

Spread apples in the bottom of the Dutch oven.  Sprinkle dry cake mix over apples.  Pour can of 7-up over the cake mixture.  8-10 coals under the oven, 15 or so on the lid.  Ready in 30-40 minutes.

Cabela’s Berry Cobbler

  • 1 can blueberry pie filling
  • 1 can strawberry pie filling
  • 2 boxes Cabela’s Cobbler Mix
  • 1 cube butter
  • 1 can evaporated milk

Melt butter in the bottom of the Dutch oven (will just take a minute over a bed of coals).  Mix Cabela’s Cobbler Mix with milk.  Pour into Dutch oven and top with both cans of fruit (a great fresh substitution is 4 cups berries that have been mixed with 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup flour).  8-10 coals under the oven, 15 or so on the lid.  Ready in 45-50 minutes.

Semi-Homemade Sticky Brown Sugar Cinnamon Rolls

  • 1/2 cube butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon
  • 1 can refrigerated biscuit dough

In a small saucepan, heat butter and brown sugar until sugar is dissolved.  In a medium bowl or plastic baggie, mix white sugar and cinnamon.  Coat biscuits with sugar/cinnamon mixture and place in a greased pie pan or Dutch oven.  (Biscuits can be cut into 4ths for “Monkey Bread.”)  Top with butter/brown sugar mixture and place in a pre-heated Dutch oven.  6-8 coals under the oven, 15-20 on the lid.  Ready in 15-20 minutes.  Watch closely as you don’t want the bottom of the rolls to burn.
