My son Kazden, had the fantastic opportunity to work with master Dutch oven cook, Cee Dub, this past weekend at the Pacific Northwest Sportsmen’s Show. It was a spontaneous decision but fit right in with Cee Dub’s seminar titled “Dutch Oven Cooking With Kids.”

In order to work in the Camp Cooking area, Kazden had to get his Oregon Food Handlers Card. He easily passed the test and was excited about helping me prep for my seminars, not realizing he would be assisting Cee Dub, in front of a live audience of over 100.

Here’s Kazden’s account, complete with photos of the three recipes he helped with.

Mostly I have helped my parents with selling their cookbooks, hunting books and fishing books in their booth. I have even had my own booth with my brother selling ThermaCell products and assorted outdoor gear that our family uses. My mom has been teaching cooking seminars and doing presentations for 9 years. I wasn’t able to legally help her in the camp kitchen until I was 13 years old and had a food handlers card.

Dump Cake ingredients.

Dump Cake ingredients. For this cake we poured in cans of berries, added fruit and sprinkled on cake mix. Pour about 12 ounces of 7 up on top of the mix. Place on 8-9 coals with 13-15 coals on the lid. Cook about 40 minutes.

Burrito ingredients. To make the burritos we just put eggs in a ziplock freezer bag, added ingredients and put in boiling water in a Dutch oven for 7 minutes.

For the Dutch Cookie, I pressed cookie dough into the bottom of the Dutch oven and sprinkled M & M's on top. This cooked with 8 coals on the bottom and 13 coals on top for 25 minutes.

Having my food handlers card, I only expected to be helping my mom with chopping and prep work. But it turns out, I got to do much more than that, thanks to Cee Dub. For his seminar, Dutch Oven Cooking With Kids, we made Breakfast Burritos, Dump Cake and a giant “Dutch Cookie.” I have made the Dump Cake many times with my family and actually helped her write this article for Camp Cabela’s. It was also my birthday cake one year made for my class out on the playground and for another class when we were studying the Oregon Trail.

I will repost that link here once my brother has edited the show. All in all, it was a great experience and the crowd was really supportive of the fact that I was up there in front willing to be part of a seminar.”
